Insert T-pins into opposite sides of a white styrofoam ball. The ball represents Earth; the T-pins represent Earth’s north and south poles (Figure 6a).

Hold the ball in sunlight or several feet from a single lightbulb in an otherwise dark room. Hold the ball so that the light shines on it as shown in Figure 6a. This is the way Earth and Sun are oriented at the equinoxes around March 21 and September 21. As this model shows, the sun is very low in the sky over the tundra.

Tip the ball about 23 degrees (Figure 6b). This is the way Earth and Sun are oriented at the beginning of summer around June 21. Turn “Earth” slowly about its axis. Notice that much of the tundra will be in sunlight for 24 hours each day.

Tip the ball about 23 degrees the other way from its original position (Figure 6c). This is the way Earth and Sun are oriented at the beginning of winter around December 21. Turn “Earth” slowly about its axis. Notice that much of the tundra will be in darkness for 24 hours each day.
